What is a Land Use Bylaw?

Section 639 of the Municipal Government Act mandates that all municipalities in Alberta establish a land use bylaw. This bylaw is the primary tool for regulating land use and development, and it gives the municipality the authority to grant development permits.

Camrose's Land Use Bylaw divides the city into districts, which basically define where development is permitted, what types of development are permitted, and what types of activities are permitted in buildings and on land.

Building appearance and design, landscaping, building height, size, and location, parking, loading, fences or walls, signs, and lighting can all be regulated by the Land Use Bylaw.
